What do the little stars, bombs and crosses painted on the sides of the airplanes mean? Are they like the kills you made during the last game, your performance status? I've done a little search but found nothing..

Yes it's kill marks. But not 1 mark for 1 target.

Yes, those are kill marks. Stars, airplanes and white bars are for air kills, bombs, yellow bars on german and circles on japanese planes are for ground targets.
You get:
1 mark - 1 kill
2 - 10
3 - 50
4 - 200
5 - 500
6 - 2000
7 - 10000
for each plane of course.

FTR gems: "In WoT gameplay, you can pretty much go and at least deal some damage, make yourself be known, fight and earn your kills and skills. In WoWp, its all RNG, your ping dictates if a shower of bullets hits or not."

Yes it sor for aircraft and ground kills in this particular plane for your entire carreer flying it.The number of kills needed for a particular mark goes like this:
1/10/50/200/500/2000/10000
So if you have 257 air kills and 786 ground kills on some plane,it will have 4 air kill marks(usually a star or something) and 5 bomb marks.
