Gagarin was probably my first hero. Growing in Czechoslovakia in 80's we didn't have comic books but I remember that my grandfather had pile of old russian popular-science magazines where there was lot written about spaceships and there was one issue dedicated to the first flight.
Shortly after knowing this we had to prepare our own flight to space with my grandfather and his dog. I think it was sucessful, but I forgot to take pictures :Smile_glasses:

P.S. I made sputniks out of potatoes and toothpicks (spudnik?). They didn't  go "beep" "beep" as the original one, but when you tossed them right, they made nice landings on neighbours roof, bless him!

I've had some magazines like that as a child growing in Romania ...
Now that i think about it they were quite biased towards the russians

Maybe, but that's not something we should discuss on the game forum. What those magazines did, they brought people to the science, technology etc. by inspiring their imagination as children. Biased or not, we sort of lack similar stuff now. Yes its'all on the net, but who on earth googles it nowadays?

I love Gagarin
not because of the space flight but because of his true love to his friend Vladimir Komarov

a touching story

I am not an American , but I want to comment on this line "Gagarin’s mission aboard the capsule Vostok 1 won the space race for the Soviets" , Well wasn't landing on the moon ( by your competitor "USA" xD) was a victory for USA in the space race ?

Or the story of one of the smallest pilots to ever visit the outer space. He had less than 1.60m if I remember correctly but with an iron will low height is never a disadvantage :)

Gagarin was not the first man in space. There were some people before him, but they died, and the Soviets didn't want to have their propaganda spoilt, so it remained secret. It was found by Italian brothers-radioamateurs, you can read about them here: http://en.wikipedia....diglia_brothers

Wouldn't small size make you more likely to get into space? Less weight and all that.

I know I couldn't try to become a combat pilot in army (well, air force) because of my height, I'm too tall to fit in the planes properly.

That's not an established fact, but a theory, in addition supported only by evidences of quite dubious nature. Basically the same kind of rumours as saying the landing on the moon never happened.

Well, armstrong was 1.80, Aldrin around 1.78 so Gagarin's 1.58 is definitely a difference :) I'm 1.93 therefore I won't be allowed to fly anywhere so I get your problem :)
