Between tiers 1 and 4 better go for the Japanese but try the others as your play style may match other nations aircraft due to their differences.

Sounds to me like he's looking for a good "All-rounder" which would be the Japanese on T1-4, but then it's the Spitty from T5-8
Stay out of clouds. The silver lining everyone keeps talking about might be another airplane going in the opposite direction.  Reliable sources also report that mountains have been known to hide in clouds.

I started with Spitfire line and it worked out for me.

Don't care really about stats, but this looks fancy as flip.

The Russian La line is also good allround, especially LaGG-3 and La-9.

The La-5 and La-7 are quite nice, too - good firepower, nice maneuverability and decent speed and altitude performance :-) Agree on the Spitfires, too, they have a good bit of everything and are probably "the" allrounder planes. Before the nerf to maneuverability when they were assigned "multi-role fighters", I'd have recommended the American carrier-based fighter line (F4U and alike), but now they don't feel as good as they used to, so I'd rather stick with normal light fighters.
Japanese planes are a line that is very likely to end up "not finished" because they don't forgive mistakes and while they are good until T4, at higher tiers when planes start flying high, they often end up being useless - can take opportunities to shoot enemies when they make grave mistakes, but that's about it due to lack of speed and altitude performance.

Since you started with germans as well, don't forget to read up on BnZ and using altitude to your advantage, because you'll need this in BF109s.

He will also need to learn to use speed & gunnery properly in case he decides to fly the 190's...

Don't start the GAA line as long as you are not comfortable flying fighters at T5/6, as GAA are no beginner planes (due to their impact on the game outcome).

"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush his achievement and remove all record of his very existence. From that defeat there is no recovery. That is the meaning of victory."

From a gameplay point of view, at low levels I find the I-16 to be a popular choice for players.  Decent turning and pretty strong firepower at tier III and tier IV. You then have the LaGG-3 and other La fighters which will serve you well.

From a personal point of view - British planes and Spitfires all day, every day :B
