I received an answer to my trouble ticket. I've followed their guidance and will see if it helps. I've copied their comments underneath for others to read as some of the suggestions I think could be followed in advance to proactively avoid crashes. I run Win 10 Pro x64;

We are sorry to hear this is happening to you and would like to help you solve this matter as fast as possible. As a first attempt to do this, please check out the most common solutions to this kind of situation:
1. Follow the steps provided in each of the Support articles listed below:
- Start the game in Safe mode.
- Delete the Cache. To erase the game cache, press Windows + R; then, paste the following in the window that pops up: %Temp%\wargaming.net\wowp\\
; finally, delete the cache folder.
2. Follow the steps from the Safe mode article, and instead of using "Launch the game in safe mode", pick the option below it: Launch the game with reset graphics settings.
3. Run an integrity check of the game files:
- Open the Game Launcher > Settings > Support > CHECK
4. Disable the game mode in Windows. In order to know how to do this, please check the following article: How To Disable Game Mode In Fall Creators Update – Windows 10
5. Disable Full Screen Optimization: this can be done with a right click on the game's .exe file -> Properties -> Compatibility
Should none of the steps above work, please send us a WGCheck report so that we may investigate further. Furthermore, we would like to see the logs corresponding to that game session; you will be able to find them by opening the World of Warplanes game folder and double clicking on the file called toLogs. Once in the logs folder, please check the file names (logs are named according to the date and time of creation) and send us the appropriate one(s).
NOTE: WGCheck reports listing mods will not be considered. Make sure the issue persists with no mods and with a fresh game client installation.
