Now, as an example, I used to prefer playing my Beaufighter with a generally more historically accurate module set-up ie. no quad turret, only rockets OR bombs, or neither. I also used to prefer flying some planes with weapons that were not the 'top' guns....because often the top guns were more 'derpy' and felt like a downgrade...or just didn't suit my playstyle.
Would setting up planes in this way preclude me from being able to experiment with upgrade or calibration bonuses/trade-offs?
Had to buy it back to check.
At the elite stage, you can set it up as you normally would, no quad turret and you can have your rockets or bombs or both. You don't have to upgrade to top guns, you can just upgrade the collimater for accuracy. You can keep...and if you want, improve the actual stock guns for either range, burst length or rate of fire, but only one of those choices or you can leave them as they are.
You can experiment with enhancement and calibration on stock parts and check out their bonuses/trade-offs.
I found that 'enhancing' first before 'calibration' is the best way to go, as you get something definite instead of a gamble with 'calibration' which can leave you worse off after spending lots of parts...at least you have a good baseline to start from with 'enhancement' as you cannot drop below that set level.
