I often don't notice when someone is shooting at me.  With AA you get a clear warning and sometimes you get the warning that an enemy is on your tail but sometimes not, and anyway that's after they've shot you for a bit.

I think the only other warning is that your energy bar flashes limply but it's hard to pay attention to that all the time.  So what I would like is a louder noise and/or visual warning to say someone is shooting chunks out of you, so you can do something.  I suppose it's good for me when shooting other folk because they don't notice too, but this is outweighed by the annoyance of losing lots of energy/HP before you've even noticed.

I understand there's a balance to be had.  You might end up with everyone twirling around the moment you lock onto them, so I'm not certain but think it would be worth looking at.

I can say the opposite. I have absolutely no problem to notice if somebody is shooting me. The sounds are there and if they fire from behind you even see the tracers flying past you. On the other hand I don't even notice the AA warning.

You have to learn two things:

1. Never fly straight if enemies are around.

2. Learn to get a feeling for your environment. The minimap is very important for this.

For some time there were these laser sounds that were supposed to tell that you'r being shot at and from where but they were horrible.

That's odd, I'm not sure there's anything - what noise does it make?  I hear the noise made when you hit another plane very distinctly but can't really tell when I'm being hit - maybe 'the sounds are there' as you say but they're a bit modest and drowned out by gunfire and other hits.

Sometimes you have to fly straightish if you're behind a trundling bomber or doing a ground attack.  Also if you're on someone's tail and they don't dodge very well.  I do use the minimap, it's good but you need more with close dogfights and lots of people.
