If any of you have seen the movie Tron which depicts game AI and virtual enemies as senescent beings with consciousness and a soul. It occurred to me that this is most likely to be true as most Hollywood movies are based on fact.

It got me thinking about how many virtual lives I must have taken in my years of gaming from killing Ghosts in Pac man and UFO’s in Space invaders through to killing 382 thousand enemies in Combat arms zombie mode. All those poor guards and bosses in Metal gear solid, GTA and of course those brave AI pilots, whom we regularly face in the most honourable of air combat.

It recently dawned on me that I’m in fact, a virtual war criminal. If the Movie Tron is correct (which I highly suspect it is) and they break out of the virtual world into real life. They’ll be coming after all of us for the numerous virtual mass murders we have committed over the years.

I was trying to come up with a number and it has to be at least 2 and a half million “E lives” that I have ended in the cruelest way. Often, I laughed whilst doing it.

I’m sure a AI prosecutor will have an exact number when they read the “E charge sheet” in virtual court.

These poor AI, had virtual families with virtual kids whom I’ve also probably killed too, as my gaming career has spanned 3 decades.

Just like the Romans did with gladiators and dismembering people, we see this as sport, when in fact it is a virtual blood sport we should all hang our heads in shame. One day we’ll all pay for our virtual crimes.

We’ll end up in the “E Hague” being judged by a Jury of all the enemies we have killed over the years,

The jury will be made up of

The ghost from Pacman, one those orange jacketed bad guys from MGS Peacewalker, a  Zombie from Biohazard, two passers-by who I did a drive by on in GTA, or run down during a car chase, that Boss from Double Dragon. A motorcycle cop from Roadrash, one of the spaceships from home world, a bot Boomerang defense plane and a Nazi from the original Wolfenstein, would be on the jury panel. Not to mention that guy, I pick pocketed in Fallout and put a bomb in his backpack. I also reactivated the bomb and nuked that town when given the option…

Looks like were all banged to rights I think we better move to the Virtual South America.

Amen!

Now I feel guilty for the mass-murders I've done... all these Kobolds, all these Murlocs, all the lol and dota creeps... These executions done on the poor Onyxias, Kel'Thuzards and LKs again and again... The poor Skyrim dragons and ogres died in my fury. And it's getting worse, I've sent billions of my own innocent tanks, planes and troops from C&C towards certain death. Now we pay our debts being hunted by the Super-bots avengers. They will hunt us to the last. Now all of this makes sense.

The Doomsday is near!

Oh c☆¤%₩ I totally forgot about all those strategy games.Millions must have died due to my poor strategic planning.

Hope they drop that one down to virtual manslaughter.

Just because they're sentient doesn't mean that they're sapient.

I mean, you don't feel bad about boiling a crab either right? And they're sentient beings too.

And, afaik, it is a far stretch to actually call the limited AI that computer games use sentient since they have no feelings.

I remember when I played CoD 2 Big Red One on PS2 for the first time (as a maybe 12 year old boy). In the first mission I follow some (non story relevant) mates on a road and then suddenly BÄÄÄM  an explosion and my mates are gone.:(

Yes, i was a bad feeling, thinking that Sgt. Conner and Lt. Johson (or whatever random name) have (had) a wife, maybe little or unborn childs. Or they have been the only kid of their parents. Yeah, it makes me sad if my (random) mates die. So I try to keep them alive.

But enemy soldiers? BOOM Headshot:P, ok, if possible I try to avoid unnesseary violence by using (non lethal) stealth or traqueliser guns (MGS even for bosses like Volgin)

Don't forget all the lemmings and worms.

I admit that I desecrated dead enemies as Duke Nukem - and it was fun

Picture the crime scene

I remember playing Warzone 2100 strategy game.

It was and still is one of my favorite games, It was way ahead of its time. You could mass or singularly order units to return for repair at different damage levels, hold ground and not move, hold fire, return fire only also, long and short range attacks etc etc.

You could rank up individual units and their AI got better and better. I purposely left a large contingent right next to an enemy scavenger base, just on the threshold where my units would not destroy the re spawn building.

I went away partying for the weekend and left my units to their own devices. (This was on the 1st mission and you could recycle your units the new ones would retain the ranks you built up.)

Upon returning, I half expected my pc to have crashed, but it was still live and my units where steadfast, every single one was now a general with between 3-4k kills each. I had maxed out my unit capacity and had around 120 Machine gun jeeps. Which could now be recycled and with enough research, they eventually became aircraft, cyborgs and hover tanks with godlike skills.

So from the beginning of the game I had an army of generals…It was like virtual seal clubbing

all those 100’s of thousands of poor scavengers who had survived the apocalypse where then mercilessly mowed down by a plethora of machine gun jeeps. and all while I was afk.

Warzone 2100 is now free to play if anyone likes old time strategy games.

I love this thread! Probably one of the more interesting philosophical posts I've ever read on a gaming forum.

So....I'm actually one of the "bad guys"???

I was only following orders!

Also, the real scare will begin once all the virtual and non-virtual outer space monsters will come after us/me. I nuked whole planets just to see the fireworks, literally...

We all are, being convinced we are good is pretty subjective,

we all have a long rap sheet. one day we will pay for "e" crimes

Just like the Empire in star wars,(the original movies not the present day jar jar binx travesty) actually the rebels where the bad guys.Think of all those poor sub contractors who died when they rebuilt the death star, all those foolish Ewoks who where needlessly dragged into a conflict which had nothing to do with them.

I actually giggled at the dead Ewok scene, when I was  I was 12 years old much to the horror of my schoolmates..so the Darkside has always been strong with me...

Having said that, George Lucas should have died in a plane crash, car crash or drug overdose after the Empire strikes back. as the Return of the Jedi was a foretaste of what was to come...kiddies films..The Ewoks where lame

No, you had the right sense. Ewoks were the harbingers of Jar Jars and stuff. The Original Sin which tainted the franchise.
