In another post I mentioned I had been taking a look at the matchmaker. I thought I would post early observations here.

I've played a lot over the last few weeks and during this period took the time to note the matchmaking of each battle. (Tier spread, how many specials on each team)

Taking a group of 100 battles I discovered the following...

Matchmaker does pretty much try to evenly spread your experience of being uptiered/down tiered.

While my first group of 100 had me being uptiered for 15 of the first 20 battles, the full result was actually only 51 battles of 100 saw me being uptiered. The other 49 I was in the higher tier.

So far so good, but what about those battles where Red team have all specialized aircraft and blue have none?

Well, yes, there are battles which are unbalanced in terms of who has the most specials.

Over a group of 100 battles I noted that this worked out at 60 unbalanced battles. However, of those 60 battles, 30 of them were unbalanced in my favour.

This leaves 40 battles where the teams are balanced and just 30 battles where I faced teams with more specialized aircraft than the team I was on.

Naturally during play my subjective impression is that I'm looking at dreadful matchmaking that constantly up-tiers me or makes me face teams exclusively made up of high skill pilots in specialized aircraft.

However the stats so far don't seem to support this. Indeed, the stats gathered and analysed so far appear to support a matchmaker that is actually doing a fairly good job.

As mentioned at the start of this post, this doesn't appear to be entirely evenly spread. It is possible to face a series of battles where the tier and/or special aircraft spread are not in your favour. But over a longer series of battles it does even itself out.

Notes.

These battles were fought over the last 3 or 4 weeks. At all hours of day from morning through till late evening. I

Tiers played were mostly between 4 and 8.

During this period I have played most aircraft types. Probably skewed in order of preference - Light Fighter>Multirole>GAA>Heavy with very few battles fought in Bombers. (I don't think this would change the results though)

I have much more data that I might analyse in greater depth but a brief look across it indicates that the trends I have discussed here in fact extend across all the data gathered.

I have not bothered to include whether I won or lost these various battles. This is not entirely relevant to whether the matchmaker did it's job. - however, can you win battles where the odds are stacked against you? Absolutely. Can you lose battles where everything seems to be in your favour? Most definitely.

Has knowing all this made me any better as a person or a pilot? No. I still feel like I've brought a spoon to a knife fight whenever I fly my Bf 110-B, I still scream at the screen at the injustice of matchmaking which is clearly designed to ruin my day and I remain convinced that I am the only aircraft in the battle which the elite AA and bots have decided to target....

(And I still wonder why the ground tech's paint my aircraft in gasoline before I take off...)

Yeah, good work.

Too bad WG will do absolutely nothing with it ... matchmaking is working as intended ™

Agreed thanks for doing the research even though a relatively small sample, I think MM tries it's best.however certain tiers are prone to horrid mm tier 3 for example. This is because of dailies requiring tier 4 games from personal experience it seems around 90% of tier 3 battles are bottom tier tier 7 isnt much better either due to people grinding for credits with premiums..

Also there's a lot of noobs who bought a tier 8 prem without really being ready for high tiers!

The specialised thing where the teams have all on one side rearely bothers me as i only fly specialised airplanes!

Best MM is tier 10 unless, you get those scoundrels who play GAA and Bomber in a flight! tusk tusk tusk very unsportsmanlike

MM sucks at every tier in my experience, even at 10.

How about a specced ace Ef-131 in one team and the other team gets a lower tier bot bomber and GA to 'balance' ... and no heavies.

MM put you in a BBMM Team yesterday afternoon - it didn´t end well for the enemy as far as i remember... :honoring:

There is an art to flying, or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. ... Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, that presents the difficulties (Douglas Adams - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy)

Yep. And thanks for that.

It was the only victory in a losing streak of 10 ... I could even contribute to the win.

And that is part of the problem ; I'm not even doing that bad. Usually end up in top 3, but I don't win. I even managed to spec the P-40 M-105 and Yak-15, not exactly meta planes.
