Here we are in 2020 and another year of World Of Warplanes v2.0 has flown by (pardon the bad pun).  This is my view of the state of the game.  I'll begin with a brief overview of the development plans published on 6th May, 2019.

MAY 2019 DEVELOPMENT PLANS AND PROGRESS
1) Completion of German and USSR bomber lines
Executed.

2) Introduction of US bombers by the end of 2019
Not executed.  There is no indication when or even if this is going to happen.

3) Introduction of new "European" aircraft in a common "European" tab
Executed.

4) Introduction of Horten 229
Executed.

5) Introduction of referral programme with the reward of the Twin Mustang
Not executed.  According to a post elsewhere the referral programme is shelved for the time being.  The Twin Mustang has appeared in shop bundles rather than as a reward aircraft.

6) Introduction of daily rewards
Executed.

7) Introduction of PvP mode
Not executed.  There appears to be no information on when, if ever, this mode will be introduced.

8) Introduction of "mercenaries" feature
The plans weren't clear what form this would take, but given the European aircraft can be switched between nations I think this can be classified as executed.

9) Introduction of "Specialists-2" feature
Not executed.  There appears to be no information on when, if ever, this will be introduced.

10) Iron Maiden's "Eddie" mascot as the gunner in a new Beaufighter
Not executed after the licensing was allowed to lapse.  The Beaufighter, less the mascot, will appear in the game at a later date.

11) Introduction "new in-game and partner activities"
Not executed.  The plans lacked detail of as to what these might be, but to my knowledge nothing of this kind has appeared in the game.

In short, many of the major development items in the plans have not materialised and, in most cases, there is no information as to when, if ever, they will appear in the game.  So far as I know there has been no further information about development plans since this May update.

UPDATES AND BUGS
The Christmas 2019 update was the first in many months.  This introduced new bugs into the game - for instance, lack of gold compensation in the Holiday Supply Crates for aircraft already owned affected a few players - but fortunately they were minor and fixed quickly.  There remain some irritating bugs in the game of very long standing, such as the post-battle disconnection and loss of battle results and occasional freezing of the game in mid-flight.  I have noticed with the player numbers during the Yak-7 M-82 event some "stuttering" of the game, but on the whole the last few months have been the most stable in the game for quite a while.  However, there was an exception; the November 13th birthday event was seriously marred by lag that lasted a couple of days.

PLAYER RETENTION
I don't know if WG HQ thinks it's good news, but the EU server player population seems at least stable and perhaps even growing slightly.  It's been encouraging to see 14 or even 16 players in a game during the Yak-7 M-82 event, though 4 to 6 players at low and mid tiers was common prior to the event.  The high tiers have been reasonably well populated during the event too, but prior to that "all bot" games or games against a single opponent were common.

GAME PLAY
The WoWP team has two major problems and a couple of more minor ones, in my view.

1) Major problem; the match making is unsatisfactory.  The two main problems are the frequent loading of all specialist aircraft on one team and the matching of, in particular, human players in bombers or ground attack aircraft against bot counterparts.  This is particularly a problem at the more thinly populated higher tiers.

2) Major problem; the top tier German and Soviet bombers are broken.  In the hands of a good pilot they overmatch ground attackers by far and they can barely be touched by fighters.  They are good at high altitudes, but they have also brought back the problem of effective low level bombing that was previously eliminated with the general nerf to bombers in 2018.  They seriously unbalance games in which they are matched against bot counterparts.

3) Missions that encourage bad play, for instance, players deliberately crashing their aircraft in order to spawn nearer a sector so they can cap it, or tailgunner kills causing bomber players to concentrate on kills instead of bombing, and so on, need to be weeded out of the game.

4) Daily missions need to be revamped.  Experienced players should not be encouraged to play at low tiers.  Equally, newer players ought to be able to get something out of the missions before they reach higher tiers.  The token rewards should be split between the 3 periods, not awarded only when the missions have been completed for all periods.

OVERVIEW
The game has been relatively stable for months, bar a few irritating long-standing bugs and player retention seems to be reasonably good.  However, it is noticeable that the pace of change has dropped off markedly in the last six months.  Many major elements of the development plays published in May have not appeared in the game.  New content has been confined to a few new aircraft, most modelled many months ago, and a Christmas event that has virtually no Christmas theming (think back to the major "Axis vs. Allies" event two years ago and the "Candy Trail" event of last year and it is clear this year's event required minimal development work).  Match making is poor and badly needs a rework.

THE FUTURE
It's hard to say.  Detailed, lengthy communcations from the WoWP team are rare.  The blog seems to have been abandoned.

Significant development work stalled during the second half of 2019.  However, though this doesn't seem like a good sign, there are reasons to suppose the game will continue, as is, for a long time.  But who knows?  WG could surprise us with another revamp, a "WoWP v3.0".

If I had to guess, I'd guess that the game as it is today is pretty much the final version of the game and this is all we will have from now on.  I don't foresee further major developments.  I hope I am proved wrong.  To that end, I make a plea for information about the future of the game to be published.  It's been too long since we knew where the game was heading.

This is not a bug, it is a feature. The problem is that game is stile working on 32 bits, and engine don't have garbage collectors, so memory leaks are consequence of this. Only way to fix this is to change the game's engine, and that is expensive procedure.

MM is really bad. It was build to shorten queue times (and that is great) and also to reduce the server load (less battle, mean less bots that need to be controlled), but it was done on expense of players experience. It was mistake to remove karma from MM, because karma was assuring players to be top tier for the half of the games, and bottom tier for the other half.

In my IL 40P I can outperform Su-10, and Su-10 is far from broken (it is actually not that good). The problem are Jedi player who can fly low and somehow stile be accurate. German bombers are OP on low tiers as well.

  Missions that encourage bad play

I agree that bombers shouldn't have to do rear gunner kills in order to specialize.

I agree that they should be revamped, but not as much how. Splitting would be complicated for programming, as it would be hard for system to determine when to consider mission completed.

What they should do, at least, is to remove period I, and to merge period II and III; so it would be possible to finish daily missions with tier X alone. Alternative is to make some missions only build for period III, and another only for period II.
The 10 tokens mission are hardly daily, because they can't be done in one day. Also there are to many annoying missions.

When daily missions were shorter and were giving 1-3 tokens, I played this game more. I wanted to get daily missions completed in a day. Now, I don't care that much, and often play only one battle in the day.

Communication is almost not existent. You can get WG staff to response usually only when there is some bug.

Having to play low tiers purely to complete daily missions does bug the hell out of me, I must admit. Experienced players playing low tiers is fine if they want to do that. But for me, I find it hard to motivate myself. Currently, I am enjoying tier 7 & 8. I am yet to find 'The' plane at tier 9 I actually like and enjoy playing.

Considering the reaction of the old player base, it would take a brave person within Wargaming to decide on starting again with V3.0. If they did (which I highly doubt), it would have to be funded correctly with enough staff. It would need to incorporate the good bits of V1.xx & V2.0. Both PvP and the current mode with bots filling the gaps. Moving vehicles (convoys etc) for multiroles and GAA's to attack, not just static caps.

If the current game is all its ever going to be, thats disappointing. But considering the complete lack of encouragement for recruiting new players to WoT, and the ever increasing game breaking additions (wheeled vehicles running around at 80+ mph & twin gunned heavy tanks that can do almost 800 damage in one salvo that can face tier 6), you would think Wargaming would want WoWP to flurish.

RFC, thanks for your serious evalutaion.
Being an engineer I tried to validate the list of WOWP plannings 2019 from my view.

Basing on the fact that several points have a higher validation and some have a lower validation my clue is that WOWP fullfilled around 50% of their plans.
you can see this different for single topics but at the end there it is still around 50%.

If you want you can see my view below.

Having the developments of the other WG titles in my mind and from my view as a regular player this is not too bad.

There are other games in the market with less new content per year and higher player population.

well it seems since eekaboo's departure , no1 has really came in his stead. So there is a serious lack of Information on what they actually have planned for the future. I still have a few bugs that aren't even adressed(still cant turn water on without having triangels all over the place) and the tokens as mentioned are a bad idea the way the missions curently are. at max i don'T go below tier 4 because i don't wanna noob bash.

Next my lack olf time makes me faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more frustrated then i used to get, and i rant ALOT! sry for that btw. If the little time i have is being wasted by players having no clue what they are doing just makes me wanna flip.

I do have hope for the future, but when i compare how the game is being handeld now, as to how it used to be promoted during closed and open beta those are worlds of difference.

it seems like content development has stopped. last winter patch had no content that required any code change to the client - as in there is no one left to do it? either WG is restructuring the team responsible for WoWp or dissolving it altogether leaving only a skeleton crew for minimal maintenance. Also the "Direct contact with devs" thread on the RU forums has taken a break. there are regular dev answers every few days but now the last one is from 23.12.2019... i don't remember not seeing a dev answer for that long. also in the last few months in that thread there are no answers regarding new any content. that alone isn't saying that much but still...

so the simple question is: are there any content plans for 2020 or is WG done with this game? given that there is no one at WG providing us with any information we are left completely in the dark about what's going on - so speculation based on thin facts is all we can do.

Well, it is the holiday season. It is Christmas eve today, and Christmas is tomorrow, so don't expect that any dev will be at work.

well sure, but in all the years before there was a lot of activity around that time so by that measure it is at very least a noteworthy discontinuity. but again this alone doesn't mean much of course. that again looked at in the context of the other lack of activity it does yield a consistent direction, no?

EDIT: as of today (11.01.2020) all player questions since 23.12 have been deleted without being answered - which i don't ever remember happening before (i don't count spam or troll questions ofc). it almost looks like the years long Q&A thread is now closing for good.
