Hi guys, I'm new here, playing tanks for 4/5 years now.

Decided to try the planes after a post on the WoT forum explaining you can get some 'easy' gold.  I quite like the game so far (it's just point and click at this stage for me).

Anyway I'm doing the combat reconnaissance missions and the first few games in my stock Ar 65 I did quite ok, got 5 enemy kills once and ended up high on my team on several occasions. However after playing a bit more and upgrading the plane I seem to struggle and get killed a lot. My question is now why, did I have some sort of noob protection? Or was I fighting bots without knowing it? (Btw I understand the difference between the red enemies and white neutrals). I played on sunday afternoon so I would expect some human opponents.

Now for missions I have to get for example three times the grade 3 result.... however I suck.

First of all, Welcome!

I think you only face bots in the first few battles, (don't know how many) then you face other human players and bots on both red and blue team.

Don't worry about sucking, we've all been there. Just keep on playing, and read the forum for tips and tricks how to avoid to suck. It helps. But after a year + some, I do suck too on occation.

The game has a tier system and as you rise higher up it you will encounter players with a bit more experience and skill.

If you enjoy the game and keep playing it you too will become one of them. :-)

That said. Depending on time of day you might find a mix of bots, lower skilled new players like yourself and also potentially more experienced players even in lower tiers..

Worth noting that even the bots have different AI levels. So while bots at Tier 1 are likely to be "beginner>intermediate" level AI those from Tier 2 and upwards might also include a mix of better (and more aggressive) bot AI's.

Thanks guys, just managed to kill 8

Probably bots though, is there a way to see the difference?

The bots have regular names. The names will also reflect the nation of the planes they are flying. (Vlad or Ivan for USSR etc)

As a beginner shooting down lots of bots is fine. Good practice and fun. You might even discover there were a couple of humans in your list of kills too. ;-)

My recommendation is move up tiers as you become more comfortable with the level you are at. Tier 1 and 2 are comfortable places to be but might not be as.challenging and you don't earn as much silver etc

Tier 3 is where you will start to meet different aircraft types and the differences in their capability (turn rate Vs speed or firepower etc) becomes more obvious.

Tier 4 is really the doorstep to the "big leagues" - at this point the rewards are much better, but you really have to start working for it. Enjoy. And see you in the skies.

Unless they're flying French plane.

Seriously, I don't know who's given to WG the list of French names they're using, but that person sure has trolled them hard.

They also, always start with a capital letter and don't use any special characters or numbers in the make up of their names.

There is also a mod to help spot them until you get used to the names...... http://forum.worldofwarplanes.eu/index.php?/topic/49465-2110-whos-the-ai-bots/#topmost after a while you won't need it at all.

BTW....welcome to WoWP's,:) don't mind what others say in game....they have short memories of themselves starting off.:child:

According this January 2019 post, there is no "noob" protection in the game any longer:
http://forum.worldofwarplanes.eu/index.php?/topic/52150-empty-server/page__pid__579512#entry579512

However, if you play at times when the server population is very low, you may be matched against bots only or perhaps only one or two players plus bots.  These games tend to be easy, but there is a catch.  There asre "daily missions" that reward players with tokens when completed.  These force experienced players to play at low tiers.  If you encounter those (they will usually have "wings" on their plane icons though this doesn't necessarily mean they usually play at mid or high tiers), you will likely find your game is hard.

Well, if you can call this noob protection, it actually exists. Added in 2.0.10 ...

Added separate matchmaker settings for new players. If the players earned less than 4,000 XP in the game, they will get into battles, where the entire enemy team consists of Bots.

Well found, though that's hardly any protection at all!

I did encounter one with wings besides his name, avoided him after he killed me twice :bajan:

4k xp is not a very long protection, this sounds correct based on my experience.

Use those wings of his as a marker "this one is to be killed first". It  eases the job of finding the next target in a melee. You just stick around for a couple of seconds until he's engaged elsewhere. Rinse & repeat & boost confidence :-)

Except that the other one with wings will see you focused and go nom, nom, nom on your hit points...

The wings you can buy when your plane is specialist. All the best parts have to be used and than a number of kills or damage points. This shows experienced players with a better equipment. Take care that they don't get beging you or point at you from the front. They almost have more fire power, more engine power and/or a higher manoeuvrability. Don't climb up the tiers too fast and skill your pilots and you will have more fun. :izmena:

So now I joined a battle, and it went straight to the map with 0:00 que time.... then it said 'awaiting players'. After a few minutes I get send back to hangar with 'plane in battle'

What is this? And why is my plane in battle while I never joined?

hmm... cannot find my screenshot folder

Edit: plane remained in battle for over 20 minutes. Logged out and in and it was back. Plane didn't show on my service record (never played it before). Strange (and slow) game this is.

Screenshot folder is not in the client.....pictures are saved to your PC picture folder.

What you describe happens sometimes, it used to happen a lot to me, but it and many other problems stopped when I ran the game in compatibility mode with Win7.

Also, every now and again you should launch the game by using the 'clear cache' option which is beside the 'Play' button(slightly darker shade of orange with little ^) on the Game center Launcher.

I got a new Win 10 since half a year and got no issues any more. The software interferes relativ deep into the OS. Might be it damages some files with the time.
