Because I get the impression I'm just cannon fodder or target practice for bot heavies.

I can not get any results because every friggin' time there is a bot heavy with a 'wanted dead' poster of me and shoots me 2, 3 times before I can accomplish anything. And they find me every time, even when I switch target.

I don't like bombing to start with, but I'd like to fly an iconic plane like the B-17 and actually get something done in it.

I'm interested in the answers to this too. I'm not a great fan of bombers either but I've just been grinding the B-17D and on my way to the next one in the tech tree (B-17G)

Is it just one of those planes that one has to suffer the grind through to get to the next one? (I've noticed several lines have a couple of dogs which seem poorly placed for their own tier never mind the impact of being thrown to the sharks with the next tier up. Is the B-17G one of these?

The B-17D is terrible IMHO. I ditched it as soon as I got the B-17G ...

First experience with G were horrible. Every bot heavy was out gunning for me. Was about to give up ...

But this morning had a couple of battles that were OK and where I could actually score and get some plane and crew xp.

Its guns are much better than the D's. Jump to turret, use A and D to swerve a bit and keep firing. Use turret gunsight equipment !!

Still don't like the carpet bombing ...

US bombers generally have pretty good defense systems but OTOH they are comparably slow. And carpet bombing with planes that take a year to make a 180° turn is indeed a problem when you're having 2 heavy defense planes to get rid off at the same time, let alone the enemy is focussing on you. I'm on my way of specializing the B-32 (which is better than the B17s), and for me personally I have less problems in killing 6 planes than in capping 2 sectors.

Thanks, Aimless - it's good to know that there's a reason to continue with the US bomber line.  I've enough points accrued to buy the B32 but have held off for the reasons given by Goner and Zip.  The occasional flurry of gunner kills doesn't really make up for being last to the target and scoring 'nil points' (in my finest French Eurovision accent, back in the days when anyone watched Eurovision...) for my 2 sticks of HE because the base flips while they're still in the air.   And the reload time... enough to walk down to the aircraft galley, make some pancakes or whatever and stroll back through the flak-peppered fuselage to see through the Norden bombsight that we're only 50% of the way through the process.

B32 can be a relatively easy target for a determined human HF who knows what he's doing, make no mistake about that.

Where it shines are Lights who try to kill you - go manual, twist the plane a little to bring more guns on him and smile. Works with the Heavies too, but if HF knows what he's doing you have no chance.

Where it shines is this carpet bombing. Fly high, at least over 3,000 m, plot a diagonal route across the entire base to cover 3-4 targets and press space at the first Ack-Ack emplacement. You'll have to learn the speed you must travel so the entire carpet will cover that diagonal/straight line over the base. The beauty is how wide your carpet line is and how destructive along the entire path.

I like that plane.

That's how I do it in the B-17 ... dropping one stick and turn around for another one takes too long. So if it looks good I drop both sticks.

Also don't slow down too much, that's overkill. Try to make a long carpet ...

Exactly.

Especially for B-32 it's important to learn the speed you must fly (been a while, forgot the exact number) at, say, 3,500 m for the carpet to be long enough to cover the entire base, from the first target on your line to the last. Don't worry will it be enough for a middle one, heavier, target - it will be.

The most important thing in flying carpet bombers is to plot your approach, the line with the most and the juiciest targets.

Yeah, it becomes a challenge when someone in a faster bomber got there before you (ie. every other bomber) and left some scattered buildings. But it's great fun if you manage to finish them off and get all the GT kills and cap ;-)

I'm glad about every red bomber in the sky, because I have at least two planes who are built for shooting them down. In the higher tiers many planes can fly that height and some better kook for bombers because of their four 30 mm guns and 24 salvoe rockets. So I've stopped flying bombers since heavies can reach them.

They literally can turn games around if your team doesn't have the right interceptors to stop them:

They can prevent you to take caps if your attack aircraft don't pile up enough damage, they can kill you with bombs, it's random but it happens simply because of the carpet bombing, so when you're attacking a cap with a multirole it's not a good place to be if there is one above you, they can take the cap on their own in two passes.

Reason why increasingly, I am after fighter or multirole with good high altitude capabilities, I saw too many time a bomber and an attack aircraft win the game for their team, it only takes two of them, the reason why the B-17 is more dangerous is not only the carpet bombing, it is its altitude capabilities and defenses.

If you have below-average heavies or high altitude fighters in your team, you're in trouble, you can't touch them and they can drop 16x500 lb bombs on their targets from 2200m.

If I was flying one of these (not gonna happen), I'll take down freshly taken sectors when the enemy is focused on the next one, it's points taken away from them with possibly a capture, not above airfields unless you're fully upgraded, specialist config and tons of points on your crew.

When I'm in my B-17G, matchmaking always makes sure to put two bot heavies on my tail when there are nu human heavies in the queue. And they are always at least average, but mostly above.

The B-17G was the bomber I surrendered flying bombers. But perhaps someone knows how to avoid getting killed all the time.

As I suggested, without knowing I admit, maxed-out it can be an asset for the enemy team, it's a tVI, and even with a Ki-102 it's not obvious to take them down, first, they pack a lot of damage and will let you crippled fast, second, when flown high enough, they are damned hard to reach.

Now obviously, you know better since you flew them, but as a heavy fighter/multirole/fighter pilot, I really think they are the most dangerous targets of all.

The problem is, that when you fly really high, you are not very accurate ...  I've seen those stratosphere pilots, they survive but they don't hit very much.

And up there, bombing gets even more boring.

What i do like is low-level or dive bombing with A-26B or Pe-2's.

But it's true, if and when you manage to score, equip the plane and train the crew, it gets better in defending itself. Especially against light and multi-role fighters. I even trailed a German bomber while waiting for reload and my gunners completely shot it up. Did manual gunning and flying with A and D ... but I still don't understand why people actually like flying bombers.

At mid tiers you are dog meat and at high tiers planes can't touch you. No fun either way.

I like the idea of this aircraft and when you are high tier it works well. Planning ahead is the way to go 'cause you are SLOW! Max out the turret range and aircraft skin and get camo for each season.  Get the right angle for 4-5 guns to fire at once. Gunner with armorer, defensive fire and endurance (get more skills when you can). Flying at 2500-3000m is best. Boost to cover as many ground targets as you can. Don,t forget Maneuverability is an awesome 1 so dodge rather than turn. As ever take the persistent bot HF head on if possible, ram some hp off them and finish with guns.

Well done!

That's what I expect from this A=C once fully researched and put to "specialist" configuration, I haven't played much bombers but I think it might be possible to improve bombing accuracy and obtain better results from high altitude?
