Erm, you're mixing two planes together. The Pancake we have in game is a further development of the V-173, photo of which you posted.

https://en.wikipedia...ki/Vought_V-173 versus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vought_XF5U

'A developed version of the original V-173 prototype, the XF5U-1 was a larger aircraft. Of all-metal construction, it was almost five times heavier, with two 1,600 hp (1,193 kW) Pratt & Whitney R-2000 radial engines. The configuration was designed to create a low aspect ratio aircraft with low takeoff and landing speeds but high top speed'

Early testing was done with fixed undercarriage, one of the remaining is in that museum.

Later testing was done with retractable.

One wonders how WG got hold of the flying characteristics ... like a bunch of other 'paper planes'.

Although two aircraft were constructed, a lone XF5U-1 underwent ground runs but never overcame vibration problems. Taxi trials at Vought's Connecticut factory culminated in short "hops" that were not true flights

Anyone still flying this? I used to love it much before the nerf, hasn't flown it since. Has anyone stayed faithful?

It was one of the first heavies I flew and I loved it ... but after they "fixed" it in 2.0.9 it just didn't feel the same. Only fly it occasionally.

XF5U — decreased pitch and yaw rate, increased roll rate. Slightly increased stall speed, decreased boost duration, but slightly increased the speed of boost duration recovery. Decreased range of fire, accuracy, and rate of cooling of M39 guns. Increased time of engine recovery after critical damage.

Havent played with it much as I've been working through speccing other ac but I still think it's a very good HF at it's tier. It was the correct decision to balance it thats for sure, the Tiny Tims are still fun as well :D

Was glad I had the crimson dawn event to speed through it as I completed the F7F just as that started.  Hated it.  Without the top guns you can't hurt anything at level, never mind when up tiered, and I always found them easy meat when flying other planes, even tier 7s, having flown it I now know why.  Enjoyed the F7F and loving the F2H, but can't think of any redeeming features of the flopping pancake.

Sic transit gloria pancake...once a candidate for the most powerful aircraft, tier for tier, in the game and now just another dusty relic.

Yep, too bad it happened to her.

I can understand & deal with the flight characteristics nerf, but the gun nerf was uncalled for and now makes this plane a torture to fly.

The Pancake provided one of my favourite moments in the game years ago, when I decided to fire a Tiny Tim into the ground ahead of a ground attacker, only for a second ground attacker to change course and also come within the missile's blast radius.  I've never come close to a "two for one" kill since.
