Interesting find, thank you. As a sidenote, as we talked about gunships some time ago - such gunships were posted in a sort of similar role as the assemby ships, being central in their respective combat boxes. Of course their job wasn't to help with 'bunching up', but they were characteristic enough (e.g. twice the number of barrels than regular planes) to become a nucleous for a formation.

I had heard about assembly ships before, but still a very interesting story.

Must have one those Aircam Aviation series booklets about them ... somewhere.

Nice video!

They also did something similar when making the Battle of Britain film. A B-25 was painted up to allow easy formation flying behind it, and it's tail gun was swapped out with a camera.
