I was just starting primary school when dad took me to the local cinema to watch "The Battle of Britain" and that's when all this airplanes thingy started for me.

Forgot about the movie, saw the part of it on TV the other day, then one thread here reminded me the pilots can be modded too... so meet my three heroes from that movie :)

If anyone wants three of his British pilots look like this, catch this zipped file

https://www.mediafir...pilots.zip/file

...and unpack it into this path

Ask any actual RAF pilots of the era, and the only picture they would want to see was Section Officer Maggie Harvey in, er, full battle-dress including webbing... (slight 1937-pattern joke)

Now if I remember, the third of those is Squadron Leader Canfield as played by Michael Caine (who, incidentally, is also the unseen Spitfire flight leader on the radio in Nolan's 'Dunkirk').  Speaking proper English as I do, being of fine Scottish stock, I am capable of amusing you with a faithful rendering of the following:

The engines are overheating and so am I.  We either stand down or blow up.  Now, which do you want?

Broadcast on all frequencies , in all languages even in Welsh :

Michael Caine

[following the destruction of his airfield]  And what flaming genius thought of sending us to that dump of a flying club?

Especially as it's full of dead flies.

A pity both those recent films were duffers.

Depends how you look at it:

British author and amateur historian Roger Darlington:

"He wasn't just 'one of' - [Sgt Josef Frantisek] was the top-scoring pilot of the Battle of Britain... He was a very ill-disciplined pilot; he was inclined to actually endanger his colleagues if they were flying in formation. So the understanding was that he would be allowed, if you like, to 'do his own thing'. So he fought a very individual battle. He was very, very highly motivated, very courageous, and he was indeed the RAF pilot who shot down the most German aircraft in the battle."

Six of one, half dozen of the other. WW2 evolved into heavy emphasis on team and team tactics (both in Europe, with RAF adopting new formations and tactics relying on team coordination) and in Pacific theatre (where Thach Weave, for quite some time the only way of dealing with Zeros and Oscars, was simply impossible without a disciplined team). And don't forget, this 'private war' cost him his life - he died alone, without any of his collegeagues around.

I just read in an article about the top 5 scoring pilots in the BoB that his Hurricane crashed when returning from a patrol ...

On 8 October 1940, František's Hurricane crashed in Ewell, Surrey, on return from a patrol. The cause is not known. It has been suggested that he may have been making aerobatic figures to impress his girlfriend,[citation needed] who lived nearby, or it might have been a result of battle fatigue and physical exhaustion.

Btw ; there seem to be some pilots who have more BoB kills ;

Eric Stanley Lock - 21 confirmed kills

James Harry Lacey - 18 victories

Archibald Ashmore McKellar - 17 1/2 victories

I met Ginger Lacey while I was doing my own training in N Yorkshire, when a colleague and I went one weekend to a parachuting airfield not too far away.  Got chatting to a gentleman who was introduced as one of the occasional pilots, who'd been flying for a while.  It took me a few minutes to work out who I was talking to - really pleasant, modest man with time for anyone interested in flying.
