Welcome to the weekly aircraft recognition challenge.
This is a small, just-for-fun competition, that will test your ability to recognise the type and mark of an aircraft. A vital skill for any pilot, especially ones expecting to go into combat. Knowing the type, and therefore the associated capabilities, of a plane is crucial to deciding whether or not to engage a target. Of course, it is also a great way to show-off or annoy your friends. (particularly while watching a movie, I find that always grates gears and draws groans.) It is also a subject that I teach to Air cadets in my spare time (when they let me) and that I'm quite passionate about. So I am starting this friendly competition for anyone who wants to take part. Once a week, I will post a photo of an aeroplane below and it is your job to try and guess what it is by posting your answer in a reply. The photos I post will mostly be of military aircraft, of the period we see in game, but I will also branch out from there to keep things varied.
If you think you can identify a plane, just post a reply below. If you are the first person to correctly guess what it is, you can score points for several things:
1 point for correctly guessing the manufacturer
2 points for correctly guessing the series name or number
3 points for correctly guessing the mark or modification number
That means you can score a maximum of six points in a week. I'll give some examples of how this is possible.
Say that the picture is of a Supermarine Spitfire PR.9, if you were to answer Supermarine Spitfire you would score 3 points. (1 for saying Supermarine, 2 for saying Spitfire) But if you were to answer just Supermarine, you would score just 1 point. Alternatively you could answer Supermarine PR.9, Spitfire PR.9 or any combinations of the above categories to score points. (one quick note about the second category, not all aircraft have a name, like Spitfire, to identify their series. It might instead be just a number, like Heinkel He-111 H-3. He-111 would qualify for category two and earn 2 points.) However, if you see that someone has put a correct answer before you, but not for all the categories, don't worry. Put your answer in full and you can still earn the points for the category that was previously unanswered. So, for example, if player one puts Supermarine Spitfire, they will score 3 points. (for correctly guessing categories one and two) You can then answer Supermarine Spitfire PR.9 and score 3 points for correctly answering the third category. I will post the answer to the previous question with the next photo, along with the awarded points and who they were given to. I will also keep a track of all points awarded and there will be a leader board for the current top three scoring pilots. As this is a just-for-fun competition, there wont be any prizes except bragging rights.
Just a few other things:
- If you are posting an answer, do not say anything else in that post and write in the format of category one then two then three. To confirm, the order is manufacturer, series name, mark.
- If you want to say something else, please do! But just make sure it is in a separate post from your answer and vaguely on topic. We all know the MM is not what it could be, but there is other places to discuss this.
- The photos that I post will also be mostly my own, to get round any possible copyright issues. So feel free to use them if you like, just PM me a link to where ever your putting them so I can see too!
- If you can't see the picture, please please let me know so I can fix it. I have had issues with this in the past, and I expect more in the future.
- If you have any questions or suggestions for the improvement of this competition, please do post them below.
- Normally I intend to post the pictures on a Sunday morning, around 10:00am - 11:00am CEST, but this is only an approximation, and (knowing me) it will most likely differ from this occasionally. I will also post here about any interruptions in this service.
- If you decide to edit the post with your answer in, the date and time of the edit will be counted as the time of the answer being submitted.
- In the event that an answer for C3 is not available, the points for the other two categories will be doubled.
- I I have used a picture that is not my own, I will put a disclaimer below the picture, and cite it's source along with the answer, one week later.
