Hello all i want to ask you a question. Now i try to reach il40. Currently playing il10, I saw that il20 and il40 rear's gunner module which requires 28k exp looks same. But in details each rear gunner belongs its plane. İ mean rear gunner with il20 says it is compatible with just il20 and same for il40. So i am willing to get il40 fastly and ı dont want waste my exp. If i research il20 rear gunner will be the gunner of il40 unlucked? Please enlighten me.

The IL-40 has different rear gun mounting so in spite of the same gun its different module so you will not unlock it for IL-40 by researching rear module for IL-20. The IL-20 has top mounting of rear gun, IL-40 tail mounting.

Edit: Btw the names of modules are different too: for IL-20 it is "23 mm NR-23" and for IL-40 it is "23 mm AM-23".

Look at the second rear gun module for IL40. In the middle one

There was a devs decision at some point limiting module inheriting between planes. Shared unlocks were much more common in earlier versions, now they happen less frequently, and more often than not one is forced to research modules from scratch when progressing in tiers - even if they appear to be (or indeed are) identical. The change to naming, though seemingly justifying the renewed grind, is a cosmetic effort to 'explain' why the same gunner/cannons/rockets/whatever has to be researched again. The decision was made to make the grind a little longer, thus keeping players engaged longer.

You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day

That could be the reason, elevation is different ...

I doubt anything so fanciful like that in regards real world considerations

In short, with most similar grind types of video games, such additional "same module" grinding is basically just an XP sink. These are used on some aircraft just to basically make up the same amount of XP requirements it takes for an aircraft of that tier to make it elited and/or requirements to get from one tier to the next.

One such aircraft guilty of this I can recall off the top of my head is the Bf 109 Z.

When I glanced through this aircrafts modules back when I first bought it, I saw that it had a gun upgrade of 30mm cannons split into two sets. One pair for the hubs and one pair for the wings. But I could see that they were identical 30mm cannons. On paper, no difference whatsoever, both sets of 30mm cannons were the exact same MK-108 1942 model, only one set was installed behind the engines to shoot through their hubs, and the other set was installed one on each wing. Yet I was cheesed off to discover after grinding the required amount of XP to unlock these 30mm cannons, that I had to do it all over again because unlocking one set doesn't unlock the other. :sceptic:

But ya, just an XP sink to buff the required amount of XP to make this thing Elited and I guess on parity with the XP it roughly takes to elite other T7 aircraft or heavies.
