The term foo fighter was used by Alliedaircraftpilots in World War II to describe various UFOs or mysterious aerial phenomena seen in the skies over both the European and Pacific Theater of Operations.

I made a model of the Pacific Pearl back in highschool for my Aviations class, had a little green marble stuck in it for the Foo Fighter! Wonder if it still hangs from the cieling, that was only hmmm, 28 years ago.......
