Nice article. I would like to read more like this.
Also I want to add this since its about the IL-2:
This is a riport and video footage about a IL-2 wreck that was found in Lake Balaton here in Hungary in 1999. After it was recovered they have taken it to the "Museum of Hungarian Aviation". http://en.wikipedia....garian_Aviation
(The IL-2 wiki page also mentions this http://en.wikipedia....raft_On_Display)
There where other planes taken out of the lake too and suposed to be a few more in there because of the air battles above the lake.
Ps.:
How do I make that the youtube link is just a simply link instead of a embedded video?

For those of you, who don't understand hungarian (witch is the most of you).
The part in the video from 1:19 talks about the recovering of the aircraft, witch was presumably shot down in 1944 december.
But the part before that, is what truly is important. It talks about, that many aircraft have been shot down above the lake Balaton, and are still inside it. It mentions that in the recent years (this video was made in 1999) 3 noteworthy planes have been recovered. A Petlyakov Pe-2 bomber, a Junkers Ju 88 multi-role aircraft, and now the two-seater IL2. In the report they say, that at the end of the year of 1944, the battles have waged above and around the skies of the lake Balaton almost every day.

Lake Balaton is not that deep so they might find some more.

Excellent article!
Low level flying is a kick in the pants. The IL-2 sounds like it would be great fun to fly.

Each time I read about either Tank of the Month, or here some story about some famous WWII airplane I am stunned by ammount of information packed in very readeable article. Usually its boring and not fun to read, but articles here reminds me on History channel, where there is pack of info wrapped up in very watchable episode. Dont know who is writing this but it does very nice job! Even tho Im not playing atm, i come here to check out new stories and always read them with great joy!
Keep it up!

Like in WoT, everybody experianced, playing Russian tanks is like playing on the "easy mode"
Me and I assume more people are not really fond of this Soviet propaganda.
Really hope this WoWarplanes game will be more accurate.
I play an other WarPlanes game , and for thats Russian aswell.... jes, there you have it. Russian plane are OP aswell.
On that forum people are complaining about it, so I guess WoWarplanes would make the perfect differance if they would impland WW2 planes as they were.
Finally Germany would be number ONE choice, and playing war games would be nice again.
I think this willnot be the case.... but fingers crossed

And what would be the ^^$%&^&% point of the game then !??! In an online game, esspecially an arcade such as WoWp ,ballance is what's important. If one nation has clearly supperior planes ,WTF will be the point of playing the other nations

Not to mention, that the USSR did produce some great planes during the war-their main problem was theineffective pilots which were no match for the better trained and more experienced german pilots.

@ZWC
Fact 1. Russian late war aircraft such as the La-5FN or Yak 3 were equal and in some respects superior to German planes...
Fact 2. IL-2 was called a Flying tank because it flew low and had plenty of armor to protect it from ground fire and fighters. Also Hs.129 came into service late war where as IL-2 in different variants was present throughout the conflict.

"Oma hatte das Fliegen erst spät gelernt, und nach anfänglichem Misstrauen reagierte sie darauf mit dem gleichen Enthusiasmus, den Schmeißfliegen einem leckeren Fischkopf entgegen bringen. Es gab jedoch ein Problem: Oma Wetterwachs sah in jedem Flug eine gerade Linie von A nach B und konnte sich einfach nicht an die Vorstellung gewöhnen, dass andere fliegende Dinge ebenfalls gewisse Rechte hatten." I remember my grandpa describing this thing (he was at an AA division in Linz when he was 17), they called it butcher and black death or simply "Rata" for the sound it made when firing.
As I'm pretty new to this game, hopefully I unlock this "concrete plane" soon. Awesome work of the devs, feeding the community with historical data, nice. That's something those jerks at the big companies would never do for instance. Mainly because their audience isn't interested in it, but well.

They over-used Il-2's design in 10 other variants such as Il-8 and Il-10...
